9/9/08: First day of School!!We woke up early today so that Felicia would be ready for her first day of scuola materna. We left the house around 8:30am and arrived at school a little after 9am. Felicia was so excited to wear her grembiule, which is the white smock all the kids wear. The nuns loaned us 2 since she will only be there for 3 months, which was so nice! When we arrived, all the parents were milling about while their kids played. Felicia immediately headed for the scivolo (slide) and started playing with the various toys in the garden. She was a bit timid at first, but after a while started owning the place! She especially liked the red dondolo, and the big 5-person riding horse, which she keeps insisting is a camel, I guess because of the humps!
We went to meet with the director, who was also nice, and she gave us all the paperwork to fill out. We need to get her immunization record and go pay the 130-euro inscription fee at the poste. It should cost around 500 euros for three months, which means that 3.5 months here will cost a little more than a month in the US! Since the groceries are so outrageous, at least we can save on daycare! They try to ease the kids in here, so the first week is half day (9-12) with the first time kids, then next week half day with all the kids, and the week after they go to full time. We need to find her a sheet for her little cot at school for naps, and label her cups and all too.
When we finished meeting with the director, we went back in to check on Felicia, and she was inside playing picnic with some kids and the teacher. After school, we headed home for lunch. We asked her all about her day and if she had fun. She said they played fuori (outside) and her teachers told them to go dentro (inside), so I guess she is picking up some Italian!
We spent the rest of the day on the phone with il comune di Lipari, trying to figure out why they still haven't filed our marriage certificate that we sent three years ago. They are such a mess, you can't even imagine! They said they can't find anything and it will take a long time to find the document to send back to the consulate so I can get my Italian citizenship. They are so incredibly a mess, there is even an article from march on Messina TV called, "Comune di Lipari: Ufficio Anagrafe in condizioni vergognose." "Lipari's Record's office in embarrasing condition". I guess I'll be waiting another 3 years for my Italian passport, argh!
That evening, we went out to La Standa, which is the biggest supermarket in the old city center, still not Kroger, but better than the others. Then dinner, bed, and prepping for meeting with the dean tomorrow!
